BUXTON WITH LAMMAS
Railway Bridge over River Bure

II

Railway bridge. 1879, for the Great Eastern Railway. Constructed by William Waddell. Cast-iron and steel construction. Three span girder bridge over the river Bure. Supported on paired cast-iron columns, two pairs cross-braced together to each pier. The pier bases have been extended in modern concrete to form cutwaters. Rivetted steel girders above with cross girders all in steel. Cantilevered brackets carry walkways with tubular railings on either side. An early and well-preserved example of a transitional type, using steel for the girders in tension, but retaining cast-iron for the columns in compression.
HISTORY. The Bure valley line of the Great Eastern Railway was built by William Waddell in 1878-80; the section that includes this bridge being opened on 1 January 1880. The line was closed to passengers in 1952, and to freight in 1982, but it was re-opened as a 15" steam railway, the Bure Valley railway in 1990.
