Fire station. 1903-4. by LCC Architects' Department. MATERIALS: red brick with Portland Stone dressings; slate mansard roof with dormers; brick ridge and lateral stacks with stone bands and cornicing. PLAN: L-plan. EXTERIOR: 4 storeys and attic; 6 bays, outer bays framed by pilaster and quoin strips with alternate stone blocks rising to simple blocked entablature and dentilled cornice (hacked away in part). Projecting ground-floor elevation of stone ashlar with 4- and 5-light stone mullioned and transomed windows to left of double entries for engines (blocked up at time of survey) and moulded cornice to sunk parapet surmounted by iron railings. Flat-roofed dormers and stacks flank double-gabled central dormers with banded brick and stone facade and 4 keyed segmental-arched 12-pane sashes. All windows are 12-pane sashes with segmental brick arches, except those on 3rd floor which are flat. Similar 6-bay left-hand return to Shorncliffe Road with mullioned and transomed windows and triple-keyed segmental-arched blocked architrave to doorway; canted end bay framed by similar pilaster and quoin strips; similar cornice and flat-roofed dormer. Narrow tower to rear has segmental-arched openings and stone ashlar upper stage surmounted by open pediment. INTERIOR: not inspected.
