TQ3179 RUSHWORTH STREET 636-1/4/669 (North East side) 30/09/77 Ripley House, Rushworth Street Estate (Formerly Listed as: RUSHWORTH STREET (North East side) Merrow House and Ripley House)

GV II

Block of flats. 1896-7. By RM Taylor for the LCC's Housing Branch. Brick with some stone dressings; slate roof. Balcony access block forming a pair with Merrow House (qv) which faces it across an open court. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys. Arts and Crafts details, particularly to street elevation which has juxtaposition of gables and angular end-on chimney breasts. Gabled sections are canted out, the chimneys corbelled out at 1st-floor level and carried up bartizan-wise to emerge above the skyline. Some of these gabled sections have 2 chimneys, between which are casement windows within round-arched recesses on each floor above ground-floor entrance. Others have 1 chimney and pairs of sash windows with glazing bars with segmental-headed, gauged-brick arches. Smaller broad segmental-headed casement windows in recessed sections, those on 2nd floor tucked beneath wide eaves. Elevation to open court has plain central stairs to individual flats whose front doors are approached along short access balconies with simple ironwork. Windows mostly sashes with glazing bars and segmental, gauged-brick arches. INTERIOR: not inspected. As a pair with Merrow House (qv), generally identical to the 2 blocks at Boyfield Street (qv).
