16 cottages. 1889. By Elijah Hoole. For the Revd T Bastow. Red brick with half-timbering, roughcast, and some tile hanging to upper floors, pitched tiled roofs of varying heights with sprocketed eaves and tall chimneys. Group of cottages arranged around 3 sides of square. Arts and Craft Tudor style Irregular frontages, many gable ends, some angled. 2 storeys, 1 bay each. Plain plank doors with rectangular overlights. Slightly jettied 1st floors, mainly half timbered with proud, patterned roughcast filling, one or 2 hung with fishscale tiles. Centre of group has canted bay at 1st-floor level. Windows are 2-, 3-, and 4-light sashes. INTERIOR: not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: cast-iron garden railings with urn finials at intervals. Built along the lines of Octavia Hills pioneering ideas for working-class housing.
