Former St Luke's Church of England Primary School (Camden Schools)

Primary school, now community centre. 1845-7. Yellow brick
with stone dressings; steeply pitched slate roofs (that to
Junior School new, to replace former red tiles). T-plan.
EXTERIOR: Infant school on Jowett Street: 1 storey and attic,
5 bays to Jowett Street. End arm projects to street under
gable; to right is gabled porch with Tudor-arched doorway.
Stepped buttresses between mullioned and transomed windows;
high quatrefoil window above 3 long windows (possibly later
replacements) to projecting end gable. Hall inside with brace
and collar-beam roof.
Junior School on Sumner Road: 2 storeys and attic, 7 main
bays. 6 gables with tilehanging and timber barge-boards, 2
projecting with 1st-floor oriels. Alternating block surrounds
to doors with 3 mullioned lights above and 2- and 4-light
windows with stone mullions (some with transoms); paired and
tripled windows in gable end to Jowett Street have cusped,
ogee-heads.
Recessed extension at right of 2 storeys, 4 bays, has ground
floor supported on cast-iron columns and 3 Tudor arches (now
blocked up) with stone keys and imposts. Above, cusped,
ogee-headed 3-light window flanked by similar 1-light windows;
matching 3-light window to left. All windows with alternating
stone block surrounds.
INTERIOR: reputed to have a stepped classroom like a tiny
lecture theatre inside, a very rare survival.
