TQ3379 WESTON STREET 636-1/5/860 (East side) Warehouse Block to east of Leathermarket Yard, Units 13-16
GV II
Warehouse. Later C19. Stock and red brick in Flemish bond, some double headers. Stone dressings. Roof obscured by brick parapet. Rectangular in plan, divided into 4 sections by internal fire walls, each section 4 structural bays wide, giving the whole west elevation a 16-window range including hoist bays. Stone plat band forms plinth. EXTERIOR: 4 storeys. One flat-arched entrance to left corner set under pedimented aedicule; round-arched entrance at south corner. Elevation organized around paired, segmental-arched hoist bays, with original doors and platforms intact; hoist cranes and window glazing of authentic design as well. Flanking each pair of hoist bays is a small round-arched window with keystone. Plain storey bands. Red brick insets to pick out sill and springing bands. Arches of windows turned in contrasting brick. End sections project slightly from the centre pair. Rear to east is plainer, simple Flemish bond with no stone dressings. 12-window range in all, including hoist bays; articulated into 4 groups of 3. Plinth and storey bands picked out in brick. INTERIOR: wood floor beams carried on cast-iron columns which are Greek-cross shaped in section. The stark, high mass of the block complements the rear elevation of the original Leathermarket, Weston Street (qv) and contributes to a most distinctive industrial landscape.
