GV II
School, now apartments. Dated 1906, fenestration altered late C20. John Woodhouse, architect. Red brick with yellow terracotta dressings and Welsh slate roof. Free classical style, balanced asymmetry. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys forming U-plan with main range flanked by projecting wings. Symmetrically planned main block with high central gable. 4 segmentally-arched windows with small upper panes and terracotta keystones to ground floor, paired sash windows above each side of 3 grouped tall windows with moulded terracotta pedimented heads, projecting into gable. Small cupola with domed roof behind. Lower stair blocks advanced each side link with flanking wings. These each have tower on inner corner, with low mullioned windows in lower stage, and taller mullioned and transomed window above. Angle pilasters and parapet, squat spirelets. Alongside the towers are the 2 entrances, each in projecting terracotta porch, with shallow segmental archway and parapet. Corner of left-hand block has canted full height bay with continuous band of mullioned windows at first-floor level and flat roof. Right-hand wing links to taller gabled wing extending the main range by 2 bays and set back behind single storey classroom range over basement. This range is symmetrically designed with 3 gables, the central having tall 3-tier mullioned and transomed window, the outer gables narrow windows flanking panels with inscriptions and coat of arms. INTERIOR not inspected.
