GV II*
Probable merchant's house. Late C17, but front remodelled
later.
MATERIALS: ground floor is painted brick laid to mostly
English bond over a rubble plinth, presumably dating from an
early C18 underbuilding of a probable former jettied front,
render above; dry slate mansard roof with 3 dormer windows,
the roof sweeping lower over outshut at rear; large rubble
lateral stack to rear left (over original rear wall), a
truncated lateral stack to rear of outshut and 2 lateral
stacks to right-hand wall of wing.
PLAN: single-depth plan plus later rear outshut and deep rear
wing on the right.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys plus attic; symmetrical 3-window front,
the symmetry being the result of probably C18 remodelling. C20
horned sashes with glazing bars (also at rear), those to
ground floor and central doorway within architraves; straight
joint in brickwork to right of doorway.
INTERIOR: has C17 plank and muntin panelling to central
passage and a 2-panel fielded door right of passage; passage
extends to rear right stair hall which has good late C17
staircase with closed string, moulded handrail, turned
balusters and square newels and some surviving pendants, and a
C17 ovolo-moulded door frame further to rear of passage with
Tudor rose stops. Left-hand room has C18 dado panelling and
the remains of a cupboard left of the fireplace plus high up
on the same wall is a Tudor rose. Right-hand room has late C17
or C18 oak panelling and there is a moulded wooden cornice
(panelling altered where front window was changed). 2nd floor
has mid C18 dog-leg staircase with turned column-over-vase
balusters. There may also be other features of interest
including roof structure not inspected.
New Street contains a high proportion of fine C17 and C18
houses. A substantially complete example of a late C17
merchant's house, retaining its plan form and other features
of interest.
