Large town house, later subdivided. Probably C17 rear wall,
front rebuilt in the C18. Stucco on studwork to front with
part of ground floor painted rubble, rubble to rear; steep dry
slate roof, hipped on the right and with a modillion eaves
cornice at the front; 2 rear rubble lateral stacks and 1 brick
stack. Deep single-depth plan.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys; 5-window 2nd-floor range; 1st floor with
slightly wider window at some time replacing 2 windows over
former shopfront. C20 horned sashes, those to upper floors
within moulded architraves. Ground floor has moulded
entablature on 2 levels of former early or mid C19 pilastered
shopfronts; doorway with panelled reveals and 6-panel door
with flush bottom panels at far left, ope doorway right of
centre and another doorway towards right; evidence for old
alterations.
INTERIOR: of No.39 has a fine C18 staircase with closed
string, Tuscan newels and moulded handrail. Ground-floor room
has dentilled ceiling cornice and chimneypiece with eared
architrave and moulded cornice (both hidden behind C20 plaster
at time of survey). There is some C18 panelling visible to one
side of the attic staircase. No.40 has C18 ceiling joists,
some C18 panelling and oak studwork which is re-used possibly
ships' timbers. At the right-hand end of the house can be seen
slatehanging which has been sandwiched in position since the
adjoining warehouse was built. Both houses have an C18 roof
structure.
New Street has a high proportion of fine C17 and C18 houses.
