Institute for the blind, later school. 1876. By HG Snell, former tower demolished after damage in the Blitz. Plymouth limestone rubble with sandstone dressings; dry slate hipped roofs with modillioned eaves; stone and brick stack to left of taller central roof. Long rectangular plan. 2 storeys; symmetrical 4:5:4-bay front with central block broken forward. Plinth, mid-floor string, round-arched windows to 1st floor, segmental-arched windows to ground floor of central block and shouldered arches to ground floor of flanking wings. The piers between the windows are as a giant order of pilasters and the window openings have aprons and contain original horned sashes. The central block has hoodmoulds over the 1st-floor windows and the aprons have cusped-panelled friezes and central shields. Central round-arched doorway under a corbelled gabled hood with central trefoil-headed niche. The doorway is now fitted with a window. INTERIOR: not inspected.
