Merchant's house. Probably mid C15, remodelled late C16, much
remodelled in the C17, front gables restored and roof
structure replaced in the 1920's, the whole building restored
C20.
MATERIALS: stone rubble side walls, corbelled to each floor at
the front, stone rubble to part of ground floor and stone
rubble to rear gable end with rubble end stack; timber-framed
front and plastered, jettied to each floor; slate roofs with
pair of steep gables at the front with moulded barge boards
with turned pendants; rubble lateral stack on the left.
PLAN: deep plan, end on to the street with through passage on
the right leading to a central courtyard the width of the
passage.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys plus attics; continuous transomed
mullioned windows to upper floors. C17 and restored moulded
oak windows and moulded bressumers; leaded glazing; 2-light
window to each gable. 2nd floor has 2 x 4-light oriel windows
centred to the gables with moulded sills on brackets and a
heavy moulded headrail which formes a jetty over the flanking
windows: pair of transomed lights to the centre and small
light high up at either end. 1st-floor window is a full-width
shallow oriel with a moulded sill on brackets, it is divided
into 4 bays each with 4 lights and with king mullions between.
Ground floor has C20 4:4-light transomed mullioned window to
left-hand two thirds and moulded 4-centred arched granite
doorway with carved spandrels on the right.
Recessed bays to right-hand return are slate-hung to upper
floor and timber framed and jettied below. There are wide
transomed mullioned windows to the inner angles of the jettied
floors. The window of the ground floor continues under the
outshut.
Rear has outshut on left and slatehanging to upper floor over
a C20 reconstruction 1st-floor 3-light transomed oriel window
and a wide passage below. There is a C20 fire escape right of
the passage.
There are some granite 2-light mullioned or single-light
windows to the rubble side walls.
INTERIOR: was in very poor condition prior to restoration and
much of the timberwork is C20 replica. There are chamfered
beams, plain joists, some oak panelling, ovolo-moulded
doorframes and a newel staircase midway on the left. Original
chamfered granite fireplaces with some painted decoration.
There was much painted decoration revealed during repairs and
evidence for many phases of construction.
