Pier forming one side of entrance to large harbour. C17, much rebuilt 1791-99. Granite ashlar and rubble walls, slightly-battered, low ashlar parapet to seaward side, wide granite landing steps with rubble retaining walls, granite bollards and setts; 2 cast-iron lamp standards. The pier from which the Pilgrim Fathers sailed. Sited on the pier is the Mayflower memorial and other memorial plaques including: 1. departure of Pilgrim Fathers in the Mayflower 1620. Erected 1891 and set within a sandstone Doric portico 2. departure of "The Tory" 1839, pioneer ship of the colonisation of New Zealand, erected 1939 3. arrival of the American seaplane N.C.4 in 1919, the first transatlantic flight 4. plaque erected in 1970 to commemorate the 350th anniversary of the sailing of the "Mayflower" 5. plaque to commemorate landing in 1838 of 4 Tolpuddle Martyrs after exile in Australia 6. plaque to commemorate the laying of iron water pipes in Plymouth, 1826 7. plaque to commemorate the 350th anniversary of the wreck of the "Sea Venture", flagship of Admiral Sir George Somers who sailed from Plymouth in 1609 with settlers to Jamestown in Virginia. Erected 1959 8. plaque to commemorate the embarkation of Queen Elizabeth II on her visit to Plymouth in 1962
