SX4754 THE CRESCENT, Hoe 740-1/57/294 (South side) 25/01/54 No.1 and attached forecourt wall and railings (Formerly Listed as: THE CRESCENT, Plymouth Nos.1-12 (Consecutive))
GV II*
House at end of planned crescent. c1833 for John Marshall by George Wightwick (Colvin). Stucco with stucco detail; dry slate mansard roof behind stepped parapet with centre break; brick stack on the right. Double-depth plan with axial entrance hall approached from the left-hand side of the house. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys plus attic over basement; 4-bay front. Channelled rustication and segmental arches on impost string to ground floor and giant Ionic round-arched arcade above and with stepped panels between 1st and 2nd-floor windows. Ground and 2nd-floor windows are horned copies of original sashes with glazing bars; 1st floor with transomed casements, probably for access to probable former iron balconies. Left-hand return is 3 bays with narrower central entrance bay, the bays divided by pilasters, giant pilasters and approximately round arches to upper floors; ground-floor openings within recessed panels with segmental arches. Blind openings except for entrance bay and ground-floor left. Round-arched doorway with panelled pilasters with roundels; C20 overlight, door and sidelights. INTERIOR: former list description: good interior with oval staircase well with segmental saucer-shaped dome, geometric staircase. Hall and landing doorcases with key motif or incised friezes. Vaulted vestibule. 1st-floor room and ante room with cornices, key-motif architraves and segmental end walls. 2 ground-floor rooms with acanthus-leaf decorated cornices and one with key-motif frieze. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: forecourt walls with plinth surmounted by wrought-iron railings with arrow-head finials. A fine example of its type. Part of an important planned group of terraces and villas by Foulston and his pupil Wightwick on the Hoe, a scheme which placed Plymouth in the forefront of town planning in the early/mid C19.
