Planned terrace of 9 houses. Mid C19, possibly by George
Wightwick.
MATERIALS: stucco with stucco detail; dry slate mansard roof,
hipped returns at the ends, behind incomplete parapet with
heavy moulded cornice with modillions and dentils; complete
parapet with oculi to house on left and part of similar
parapet to house on the right; complete balustraded parapet to
house 5th from left; stuccoed copings and stacks over the
cross walls, the stacks with modillion cornices; 3
round-arched attic windows to each house.
Italianate style with palace front.
PLAN: double-depth plan plus integral service wings at the
rear; 7 houses facing The Hoe, 2 houses facing left and right.
EXTERIOR: 4 storeys plus attic over basement; 7 x 3-window
fronts, the central and end bays broken forward; round-arched
openings, most with original sashes. Original stucco detail
includes: channelled rustication to ground floor, pilastered
sash boxes; modillion cornices above between brackets
supporting balcony with paired balustrades. 1st floor has
recessed arches, dentilled imposts and cornices between paired
brackets supporting balustraded balcony; ogee-arched sashes.
2nd floor has pilasters, consoles and hoods, and sashes with
round-arched lights. Upper floor has sill string, moulded
impost string and arches, panels to spandrels and the original
windows are recessed paired sashes with pilastered boxes and
round-arched lights. There are 2 paired porches, central to
the paired recessed houses, with Corinthian columns,
entablature and modillion cornices; panelled doors and plain
fanlights. The central house has doorway on its left, the end
houses have doorways to their 2:3-window return elevations
which have details that are similar to the front elevation.
These elevations and rear have most of the original stucco
detail and original hornless sashes.
Left-hand return is 2:1:1:4 bays with 2 doorways.
Right-hand return is 5-window range plus service wing on its
right.
Rear has a stepped parapet with a 5-window range (upper floor)
to each house.
INTERIOR: not inspected but likely to have features which
reflect the richly-detailed exterior.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: freestone and dressed granite forecourt
walls and granite gate-piers with plinths and moulded caps.
This terrace is one of the most prominent compositions on the
Hoe. Part of an important planned group of terraces and villas
by Foulston and his pupil Wightwick on the Hoe, a scheme which
placed Plymouth in the forefront of town planning in the
early/mid C19.
