Large hotel. c1870. Stucco with stucco detail; dry slate mansard roof over a moulded eaves cornice surmounted by a low cast-iron balustrade; pilastered, round-arched attic window with moulded coped gable to each bay; stuccoed end and axial stacks with moulded entablature and cast-iron cresting to ridge. Italianate influence. PLAN: large U-shaped plan with pair of wings at right angles to rear, originally adjoining building of which there are slight remains to the left. EXTERIOR: 4 storeys plus attics; regular 4-window-range (upper floors) front. Ground and 1st floors each have an arcade of 15 keyed round arches on polished granite columns, the columns set on plinths between turned balustrades, over moulded cornice to 1st floor and another similar balustrade over cornice above the 1st floor. Moulded hoods on consoles to upper floors. Late C19 or C20 horned sashes except for transomed 2nd-floor windows. Rear wings lower, the right-hand wing with channelled rustication to ground floor, moulded sill strings to 1st and 2nd floors and moulded hoods on consoles. Entrance to right-hand return with elaborate iron hood. INTERIOR: not inspected but likely to reflect the high quality of the exterior. Imposing design in a prominent position relating to other fine buildings on the Hoe. (The Buildings of England: Pevsner N: Devon: London: 1989-: 665).
