House. C16, stack added c1610, additions and alterations c1710, c1776-99, c1836-77, and C20, including raising of roof. Rendered with renewed slate roof. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, 3 first-floor windows. Central doorway a C20 plank door with renewed open hood. C20 casement windows throughout. Large external stack to left with detached shaft; bread oven lean-to adjoins to left. INTERIOR: includes inglenook fireplace to west (left) room with chamfered bressumer beam and bread oven; tie-beam with tongue stop rests on exposed post. To east (right) ground-floor room a rough-hewn beam. Small amount of square timber-framing exposed to ground floor. First floor has exposed purlins. C17 roof exposed 1984, roof raised in C19. West room reputed to have chimney shelf with gears for roasting spit or jack with brass casing and a flywheel signed 'Edw. May of Whitney'. HISTORICAL NOTE: originally thatched, the slate roof replaced stone tiles c1920. A second stack (since removed) was added c1710. (Charlton Kings Local History Society Bulletin: 1993-: 10-12).
