House. 1816. For Sir Nathaniel Wraxall and his wife Jane Lascelles. Stucco facades and slate roof with cast- and wrought-iron porch, railings and balconies. PLAN: main range of 2 storeys with basement, 3 bays of which the outer 2 are canted to full height, and the central bay has a projecting ground-floor lobby; service wing to right of 2-storeys with basement (on different floor levels) a full-height canted bay; conservatory over basement to left; 8 first-floor window range altogether arranged 3:1:3:1. Crested parapet throughout. EXTERIOR: main range: central hallway plan. Flight of round-edged steps to entrance, double part-glazed doors with overlight with Gothic glazing, under tented iron porch. Ground floor has 6-pane French windows with Gothic glazing to heads. First floor has 3-light casements with 4-centred-arched lights to heads. Basement has mainly casement windows. Tented porch with diamond latticework to stanchions and ogee-arched opening; to sides of steps are stick balusters; individual balconies to ground floor have latticework balustrades and swept hoods. Service wing has 2 x 8/8 sashes and 2/2 sash. Conservatory to left has 4-centred-arched lights. Ridge stack. INTERIOR: central open-well staircase has stick balusters and wreathed handrail, ending in the basement. Enriched cornices and reeded doorcases with lion masks; glazed doors with margin-lights lead to conservatory, which has tiled floor. West ground-floor room has small fireplace in Siena and Carrara marbles. Panelled shutters to all windows. First floor originally had barrel-vaulted ceilings, now covered in; 6-panel doors and small Regency fireplaces. Basement has beams to ceilings, Regency fireplace; meat store and pantry. HISTORICAL NOTE: the Wraxall family were probably living at Elborough Cottage, No.36 Cudnall Street (qv) whilst this house was completed.
