SO9620SW CHURCH STREET 630-1/36/29 (South West side) 14/12/83 Four chest tombs and headstone approximately 10m west of Church of St Mary (Formerly Listed as: CHURCH STREET (South West side) Three chest tombs 10-15 yards west of west end of Church of St Mary) (Formerly Listed as: CHURCH STREET (South West side) Two chest tombs to west of Church of St Mary)
GV II
3 late C17 chest tombs, including one to Thomas Ashmond (?) d.1686, a late C18 tomb chest and an early C17 headstone. Limestone. 2 tomb chests have oval cartouches between projecting acanthus scrolls to ends and embellished sides, one with death-masks, the other with scrolls, surmounting slabs are undercut. The tomb chest to Thomas Ashmond has inscription tablets to sides bordered by scroll motifs and fluted, carved 'pilasters' to corners, surmounted by thick slab with cavetto-moulding to underside. Neo-Classical tomb chest has cavetto-moulded base, circular inscription panels to east side with anthemions at corners and worn inscription, cornice and slab with cavetto-moulded under-moulding. Headstone has shaped recessed inscription tablet and elliptically-arched head with scroll motif.
