Terrace of 3 pairs of houses with attached area railings and gates throughout. c1820-23. Painted stucco over brick with slate roofs, those to Nos 114 and 116 are mansard roofs, stucco end and party-wall stacks; wrought-iron window guards and iron railings and gates. PLAN: double depth plan with entrances in lower linking blocks forming a row of quasi semi-detached houses. EXTERIOR: Three-storeys with attics and basements, 12 first-floor window range (2 per house), with pairs divided by 3-lower-storey, single-window recessed entrance bays. Stucco detailing includes: rusticated ground floor, first-floor band, first-floor window architraves with frieze and cornice; crowning frieze, cornice and low parapet with panelled piers at ends. First floor: full-height sashes, mainly 6/6, taller to first floor. Second floor: 3/6 sashes with sills throughout. Ground floor: 6/6 sashes where original, otherwise 1/1 sashes. Entrance bays have mainly 3/3 sashes. Basements have 3/6 sashes. All windows in plain reveals. Attic dormers concealed behind parapet. Entrances: 3 roll-edged steps to 6-fielded-panel doors (some double doors, some part-glazed) those to central blocks have overlights and between entrances are panelled square columns with foliate caps, 3 retain dentil frieze, all with cornice and panelled parapet, surmounting urn to Nos 120 and 122; entrance to left end has fanlight, in tooled surround, that to right end has overlight, within round-arched recess. Attics: roof dormers to Nos 114 and 116, otherwise to gables. Rear: elevations have floor bands and mainly 6/6 sashes. INTERIOR: No.118 includes embellished cornices and shutters, otherwise not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: blind boxes to ground floor, Nos 118 and 120; individual balconies to first-floor windows with anthemion motif. Railings to sides of steps and to areas with gates to basement steps: Gothic-arched to Nos 122 and 124, otherwise with alternate lozenge and waved bars; anthemion finials to stanchions. HISTORICAL NOTE: Admiral and Midshipman Boyes (VC hero at age of 18) lived here in No.118. Originally known as Paragon Buildings, it included Nos 114-136. Trollope lived at a house
