GV II
3 detached villas, now school offices with link blocks, and attached railings to Nos 1 and 2. Probably c1847 by Samuel Onley with additions c1980s. Stucco over brick with hipped slate roofs and renewed grey brick end stacks; iron railings. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys with attics and basement. Three first-floor windows each. Architraves enriched with paterae; those to ground floor with round-arched heads and carved acanthus keystones; those to first floor have sills on enriched cornices. Enriched stringcourses at first floor, and below eaves, those to first-floor of centre and left houses have egg-and-dart moulding. Basement has 3/3 sashes. Attic dormers (2 per house) have 1/1 sashes. Entrances set back at left sides, single-storey porches with flights of steps to 4-panel doors and fanlights, that to left has egg-and-dart cornice, frieze and copings, that to centre has frieze and copings; removed to right house. Wide overhanging eaves. INTERIOR: not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: spearhead railings to sides of steps to left and centre houses. HISTORICAL NOTE: The Bayshill Estate was developed by a joint stock company which purchased land from the Skillicorne family in 1837. By 1843 Henry Davies, in his Guide to Cheltenham, describes `a number of detached villas .. several of which are occupied by resident families of affluence and station, and others are in an unfinished state.' Little considers these to be part of, `a superb group (of villas) that make Bayshill Road one of the great roads for architecture in all England'. The stucco detail is particularly distinctive.
