Villa. c1839-50, probably by Samuel Onley, with conversion to offices c1980s including attic storey, block to right. C20 range to rear. Stucco over brick with renewed roof. Classical style.
EXTERIOR: two storeys with basement, first floor windows. Flight of steps to central four-columnar Corinthian portico, continuous dentil and modillion entablature. 6/6 sashes throughout, those to ground floor are taller, all in plain reveals and with sills on feet. Off-centre entrances are C20 glazed doors. Crowning balustrade with bulbous balusters.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
HISTORICAL NOTE: the Bayshill estate was developed by a joint stock company which purchased land from the Skillicorne family in 1837. By 1843 Henry Davies, in his Guide to Cheltenham, described `a number of detached villas .. several of which are occupied by resident families of affluence and station, and others are in an unfinished state.' By c1845 the company was bankrupt and Onley bought much Bayshill Road property. Little described this as one of a `superb group (of villas) that make Bayshill Road one of the great roads for architecture in all England'. An ambitious Classical villa design, retained on the list for its importance in the Bayshill Road group of villas.
