GV II

Terrace of 12 houses and attached railings. 1834-7, probably by Robert Stokes, architect. No.36 rebuilt to rear c1970. Stucco over brick with slate roofs, tall brick and stucco party-wall stacks with cornices, and iron balconies, verandah and railings. EXTERIOR: central 6 houses of 3 storeys, with 3 houses to either end of 2 storeys, all on basements; 24 first-floor windows (2 per house); with service ranges to rear. 2 houses at either end break forward. Stucco detailing includes horizontal rustication to ground floor, drawn into voussoirs over windows; first-floor plat band; architrave, frieze and cornice above first floor, with blocking course to outer ranges; central block has further architrave, frieze, cornice and blocking course above second floor. First floor: mainly tall 6/6 sashes; second floor: 3/6 sashes; ground floor has tripartite sashes, 6/6 between 2/2 with cambered heads, except to Nos 31-33 which are infilled to head. Blind boxes remain to Nos 31, 32 and 33, ground and first floors, and to No.38 to first floor. Basement has mainly 8/8 and 6/6 sashes. Entrances (at left and right): flights of roll-edged steps to 3-panel doors with overlights with glazing bars. Rear retains many 6/6 sashes, some 8/8 sashes; one tripartite window to No.32 has 6/6 between 2/2 sash. INTERIOR: photographs c1990 of No.34 show embellished cornices with acanthus leaves and further foliate frieze to ceiling; otherwise not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: lancet railings with trefoil finials to stanchions to sides of steps throughout and forecourt railings where original to Nos 31, 33, 35, 36, 37, 38 and 39. Continuous balconies to Nos 34 and 38 have Carron Company heart-and-anthemion motif, that to No.38 on tall iron posts with scroll frieze; similar individual balconies to Nos 37 and 39, and similar verandah with tent roof to No.36 with scrolls to uprights; Nos 40, 41 and 42 have diamond-lattice motif to window guards. Ground-floor window boxes to Nos 40, 41 and 42 have scroll, circle and flower motifs. Rear: No.32 has ground-floor balcony with intersecting scroll motif and first-floor balcony with heart-and-anthemion. No.34 has first-floor balcony with cross motif.

HISTORICAL NOTE: built as part of the development of this area undertaken for Joseph Pitt in 1825-42 (the Pittville Estate), the general layout being designed by the architect John Forbes. Clarence Square was laid out in the late 1820s, building began in 1832. The Square was named after the Duke of Clarence, who became William IV in 1830.
