SU6500 ST MARY'S ROAD, Kingston 774-1/10/258 (North side (off)) East and West Chapels, Kingston Cemetery

GV II

2 identical facing chapels; west chapel now store. c1858. Probably by George Rake. Flint with stone dressings. Slated roof. Neo-Gothic style. PLAN: 3-bay nave, entrance porch at west end of east chapel and east end of west chapel. EXTERIOR: east chapel: west face has central porch with recessed 2-leaf boarded door with ornate iron strap hinges. Moulded stone jambs and pointed arch with paired flanking columns. Ogee dripstone. Facing stone coped gable with flanking pinnacles. Each of the low flanking octagonal wings has a short stepped buttress at each corner. At centre is a flat arched cusped stone window with rusticated stone jambs. Similar window on north and south faces of each wing. Moulded band. Above porch is an octagonal bell tower with splayed stone corners at base. Narrow pointed louvred openings to each face, cornice and splay footed pyramidal roof. Behind tower is facing gable of nave with stone kneelers. South face: 3 geometrical traceried stone windows each with pointed arch and moulded label with dropped bosses, splayed rusticated stone jambs. Diamond pattern leaded lights. Flanking stepped buttresses with rusticated stone quoins and moulded bases. Top weather stone to each buttress with small facing pediment. North face similar. West face: stepped clasping buttresses. At centre is a 3-light stone geometrical traceried window with diamond leaded lights each set under pointed arch. Facing stone coped gable with stone kneelers. INTERIOR: nave with 3 bays. Curved hammer beam trusses with wall posts supported on carved stone corbels. Diagonal boarding to underside of rafters. West porch stone cross vaulted ceiling with centre boss, vaults springing from round wall corbels. Pointed boarded doors to vestries. Former west chapel (now store) is identical to east chapel except porch at east end and sanctuary at west end. (Lloyd DW: Buildings of Portsmouth and its environs: Portsmouth: 1974-: 108).
