Junior and Infant School
II
Infant and Junior school and attached boundary wall. Opened 1901, by Henry William Dobb for Edmonton School Board. Stock brick, red brick terracotta and stone dressings, slate roofs, part replaced. Symmetrical west elevation to playground. Three storeys and attics, a central three bay block flanked by forward gabled wings of three windows. Attached two storey north wing. Central three storey canted bay with small paned timber windows, some with mullion or transom, under segmental red brick arches, some with stone keystone. Facetted swept conical slate roof with finial. Flanking stepped buttress piers with stone copings. Flanking tripartite windows similarly treated. Small gabled dormer to each side. Tall central timber bell turret with faceted spire and weathervane. Tall stone copings with small pediment to north and south gables. Stone entrances, the lintel inscribed girls, to left, and boys, to right. Above four small windows. Forward left and right wings, the windows arranged in threes, the upper storeys under segmental arches, the top central window with stone keystone. Stone dressings to gable. Brick banding across all elevations. Other elevations not symmetrical but rhythmically treated the same, on north and south elevations, gabled upper storey windows break through roof line. North elevation access to infants stairs now blocked, entrance intact. Flanking boys' entrance. Diocletian window over three tall segmental headed windows; the outer two now doors below. South elevation of four bays with upper floor projecting stack. North elevation bears pedimented terracotta plaque, inscribed BOWES ROAD SCHOOL, dated 1901 and with borough's arms.
INTERIOR. Hall at each level, upper storey hall in three bays with pierced iron trusses. Upper floor of two storey wing, angle fireplace and walls clad in green and brown glazed tiles.
Attached gate piers and wall. Stock brick, stone copings; shaped undulating profile to wall between brick piers with pyramidal stone caps, stone coping to wall linked to stone band on piers.
