New Barn Nurseries
II
House, originally barn. C16, possibly pre-1550, reassembled in C18 and converted into living accommodation in the 1920s. Timber-framed, clad in weatherboarding on brick plinth which has been partly cemented over. Steeply pitched tiled roof with end gablets. Iron pintle hinges remain either side of original central cart entrance. North front has three C20 casement windows with leaded lights and central arched wooden door with elaborate ironmongery reused from a C19 building and C20 wooden porch. Triangular early C20 wooden buttresses on concrete bases. West elevation has three windows and C20 door. South elevation has five casement windows, including large central window and similar buttresses to north front. 1920s weatherboarded garage extension of lower elevation to east.
INTERIOR: Three bays. Wall frame with midrail and arched braces above. Jowled upright posts, mainly C16, one with C18 cut profile, but arched braces replaced by bolted knees following re-assembly. Tie beam to the south appears to have been turned following re-assembly so that the worn face is now situated within the building. Roof has thick rafters, trenched purlins, arched windbraces and angled queenstruts. 1920s partitions, inserted floors, staircase and false roof to central bay but substantially complete C16 timber frame.
