House and attached railings. c1825. Probably by J B Papworth. Stucco over ashlar and brick with slate roof and stucco end stacks. Central hallway plan with 2 full-height ranges to rear.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys on basement, 3 first-floor windows. Second-floor moulded string-course. First floor has 6/6 sashes; second floor has 3/3 sashes; ground floor has outer tripartite windows with 6/6 between 2/2 sashes segmental-arched recesses above; basement has 8/8 sashes and 3/3 sashes; all in plain reveals and with sills. Central entrance consists of 4-panel double doors in solid Ionic porch with overlight and margin-lights; crowning cornice and low parapet. Rear has tripartite bow with 6/6 between 2/2 sashes, with pilasters between and cornice; some 6/6 sashes. Arches to either side giving access to rear abut Nos 79 (qv) and 83 (qv). Rear retains 6/6 sashes.
INTERIOR: retains original joinery including fielded panelled shutters. Reputed to retain numerous original features including dog-leg staircase with stick balusters and wreathed handrail; embellished cornices to ground-floor rooms; some marble fireplaces.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: railings abut at left side with lancet bars and dogbars. HISTORICAL NOTE: this is the least altered of only 4 remaining villas following Papworth's prototypical design in the Montpellier area. It occupies an important site, forming a visual stop to Montpellier Drive.
