GV II

Pair of terraced houses. c1824-28. Architect possibly John Forbes. Stucco over brick with concealed roof, brick end stacks and iron balcony and porch. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, 3 first-floor windows (1:2). 6/6 sashes in plain reveals and with sills. Paired entrances, renewed 6-panel door to left and 3-panel door to right, with overlights. Crowning cornice and blocking course with copings. INTERIOR: not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: first-floor balcony to left has central panel with scrolled quatrefoil motif between panels of ovals and with X-motif to returns. Shared porch has scrolls to uprights and frieze, tent roof. HISTORICAL NOTE: originally known as Montpellier Retreat, many of the houses were probably designed by Forbes, who became architect and surveyor to the Pittville Estate c1835-6.
