Pair of houses, now flats and attached railings. c1824-8 with later additions. Architect probably John Forbes. Stucco over brick with concealed roofs and stucco party-wall stacks; wrought- and iron balconies and forecourt railings. PLAN: double-depth with outer stairwells; outer service ranges to rear, full height to left and 2-storey to right, with further ranges. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys on basements, 6 first-floor windows (3:3). 2/2 horizontal-pane sashes where original; basements have 6/6 and 2/2 sashes and entrance at left; all windows in plain reveals and with sills on feet with roll-moulded architraves and scrolled shoulders. End entrances: flights of steps to 3-panel doors with sidelights and overlights, that to left with margin-lights. Wide eaves. Rear retains 6/6 sashes. INTERIOR: retain original features including (to right house) dogleg staircase with stick balusters and lion-claw newel; hall with modillion cornice. Otherwise not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: first-floor windows have individual balconies with embellished oval motif. Lancet railings, those to right have bars and dog-bars. HISTORICAL NOTE: originally known as Montpellier Retreat, most of the houses along the street were probably designed by Forbes, who was architect and surveyor to the Pittville Estate c1835-6.
