Terrace of 4 houses, now offices and attached railings. c1834. Stucco over brick with concealed roof, end and party-wall stucco stacks; iron area railings. Double depth plan with side hallways and service ranges to rear, full-height at left and single-storey at right. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys on basement, to 2 houses to left, 3 storeys on basement and attics to 2 to right, 12 first-floor windows (3 per house). Stucco detailing includes horizontal rustication to ground floor with anthemion motif to first-floor band interrupted by fluted Ionic pilasters to ends and between windows through ground and first floors surmounted by architrave, frieze and cornice with blocking course at left and plain pilasters to second floor at right, frieze, cornice and blocking course surmounted by end urns; all windows in tooled architraves. 6/6 sashes throughout except with 2/2 sashes to attic storey, all in plain reveals; basement has 3/6 sashes. Alternate left and right entrances: flights of steps to 4-panel doors with sidelights and wide fanlights with decorative glazing bars where original, radial glazing bars to No.2, batwing and circle to Nos 3 and 4, within moulded architraves with pilaster strips and cornice on console brackets. Right return (to Oriel Road): 5 first-floor windows; 2 blind openings, then 6/6 sashes; end window bays have outer fluted Ionic pilasters and inner Doric pilasters. Rear has 6/6 sashes. INTERIOR: retain original features including narrow-open-well staircases with stick balusters and wreathed handrails (newel post to No.3); original plasterwork and shutters to windows, otherwise not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: area railings have balustrade with stylized double heart motif between pillars. To sides of steps are railings with double scroll motif and wreathed handrails. To rear of No.3 a Carron Company heart-and-anthemion motif balcony. Occupies an important site at the approach to Cheltenham town centre.
