GV II

2 semi-detached villas (there is no No.13) and attached railings to left. Numbered right to left, described left to right. c1820-1832. Ashlar over brick (painted to left) with hipped slate roof and central ridge stucco stacks with wrought- and iron balconies. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys with basement, attics, 6 first-floor windows, arranged 1:4:1, the centre 4-window range breaks forwards; further 2-storey, single bay service ranges set well back. Ashlar detailing includes Doric pilasters to ends and centre of breakforward with incised Greek key motif which interrupt tooled first-floor band; ground-floor windows have tooled architraves. Mainly 6/6 sashes (where original), basement has 6/6, 8/8 and 4/4 sashes. Flights of roll-edged steps to end entrances within porches with Doric pilasters with incised Greek key and anthemion motif, frieze and cornice with blocking course; within a 3-panel doors with sidelights and cambered fanlight with batwing-and-circle type glazing bars. Wide eaves. Rear: mostly 6/6 sashes, shallow conservatories with multi-paned windows to both houses. Attics to rear, No.11 has 6/6 sash; No.15 has roof dormer with casement window. INTERIOR: not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: long balconies regarded as outstanding, have circular web design with scroll panels and anthemion crestings. To left window, No.15 a stone balcony with short bulbous balusters. Railings with X-motif to sides of steps to No.15. HISTORICAL NOTE: Park Place was developed by 1832. (Chatwin A: Cheltenham's Ornamental Ironwork: Cheltenham: 1975-1984: 34).
