GV II

Pair of semi-detached villas and attached railings to No.26. c1832. Stucco over brick with hipped slate roof, central stucco stacks and cast- and wrought-iron balconies, railings and porches. PLAN: main range with entrance bays set back to sides and single-storey on basement end service ranges to rear. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys on basement with attics, 6 first-floor windows arranged 1:4:1. Stucco detailing to main range includes pilasters at ends and centre to ground and first floors with sunk panels, decorated first-floor band and ornate crowning frieze (both with anthemion motif), cornice, frieze and cornice; windows have tooled architraves. 6/6 sashes throughout, those to ground floor are taller. End entrances, flights of roll-edged steps to 5-panel doors with fanlights with radial glazing bars. Wide eaves. Attic dormers have casements. Rear retains 6/6 sashes; round-arched staircase windows, that to No.24 with 6/6 sash with radial glazing bars to head. INTERIOR: not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: porches have scrolled lozenge motif to uprights and oval and openwork friezes. Individual balconies to ground floor have double scrolled lozenge motif, a design used at Nos 1-16 Clarence Square (qv) which was being developed concurrently. Arrowhead railings to sides of steps at right with bars and dogbars. HISTORICAL NOTE: Park Place was developed by 1832. Forms a group with and abuts Nos 20 and 22 (qv) and Nos 28-40 (even) (qqv).
