GV II

Villa, now 2 dwellings. c1840-50 with later additions and alterations. Builder, Edward Cope. Stucco over brick with slate roof and stucco end stacks. Tudor Gothic style. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and basement, 3 first-floor windows. Ends break forwards slightly and are gabled, and 2-storey, 1-window range set back at left. First-floor sill band. Mullion and transom windows. Central entrance with 'Gothic' surround (East), stepped 'buttresses' with pinnacles and arcaded frieze; double 4-pointed-panel doors with pointed overlight with Gothic glazing bars. Ground floor has 3-light wooden mullion and transom windows, first floor has pairs of 2/2 sashes with central mullion, all in plain surrounds and with sills, hoodmoulds with label stops to outer windows. Wide eaves and finials. Range at left has 6/6 sashes and C20 porch to angle with panelled door. INTERIOR: not inspected. HISTORICAL NOTE: The Circus was laid out in 1839-40 by Cope on land purchased from Joseph Pitt. However the basic layout of the Pittville Estate was designed by John Forbes. (Sampson A and Blake S: A Cheltenham Companion: Cheltenham: 1993-: 47,96).
