GV II

Villa. c1840-50. Builder probably Edward Cope. Stucco over brick with renewed tile roof and end stucco stacks. Tudor Gothic style. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys with basement and attics, 3 first-floor windows. End bays break forwards and are gabled. Stucco detailing includes continuous first-floor sill band; hoodmoulds with head-stops to ground- and label-stops to first-floor openings. Ground floor has 3-light mullion and transom casement windows; first floor has pairs of 1/1 sashes with central mullion; attics to gables have 2/2 sashes. Gabled roof dormer has 2/2 sash. Central entrance within 4-centre-arched recess, panelled double doors with sidelights and overlight with margin-lights. Wide eaves and decorative barge-boards. INTERIOR: not inspected. HISTORICAL NOTE: The Circus was laid out in 1840-50 by Cope on land purchased from Joseph Pitt. However the basic layout of the Pittville Estate was designed by John Forbes. (Sampson A and Blake S: A Cheltenham Companion: Cheltenham: 1993-: 47,96).
