GV II
Terrace of 5 houses and attached area railings. 1836-8. Architect John Forbes. Stucco over brick with concealed roof, brick and stucco end and party-wall stacks; iron railings and balcony. Double depth plan with right side hallways and service ranges to rear. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys on basement, 15 first-floor windows (3 per house) of which the ends and centre break forwards. Stucco detailing includes second-floor band interrupted to central breakforward by Doric pilasters to ends and 3/4 engaged Ionic columns between windows, crowning architrave, frieze and, to breakforwards, cornice, with continuous blocking course and copings. 6/6 sashes where original, those to ground-floor breakforwards in elliptically-arched taller and wider recesses; several blind boxes remain; basements have 8/8 sashes where original; all in plain reveals and with sills. Entrances to right: flights of roll-edged steps to 3- and 4-panel doors (upper panels raised and fielded, lower panels flush) with sidelights and overlights with lattice glazing bars and margin-lights. Rear retains 6/6 sashes. INTERIOR: noted as retaining original features, including marble fireplace to No.63, and plasterwork. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: continuous balconies have double lozenge motif. Arrowhead area railings and to sides of steps with urn finials to stanchions. HISTORICAL NOTE: Built as part of the development of this area undertaken for Joseph Pitt in 1825-42, the general layout being designed by the architect John Forbes. Like Nos 45-53 (qv), Nos 59-67 were designed as a faithful copy of Nos 29-37 (qv) by John Forbes, Pitt's principal architect. The purchasers of terraced houses in Pittville were required to adhere to the elevations approved and signed by Pitt and his architect and surveyor. Owners of villas were allowed more freedom of design although they were still subject to approval. No.59 completed by Montague and Church, ironmasters of Worcester. All the listed buildings along Pittville Lawn form a distinguished architectural group.
