Villa, now 4 dwellings. c1835 with later additions and alterations including garage bay to right. Stucco over brick with slate roof and stucco ridge stacks; iron brackets. L-plan with central hallway. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys on basement, 3 first-floor windows with single-storey on garage, single bay to right. Outer windows on both floors set in slightly-projecting faces. Stucco detailing includes stepped plinth surmounted by end Doric pilasters; horizontal rustication to both floors; ground-floor outer tripartite windows have Corinthian pilasters and dentil entablatures, those to first floor have tooled, eared architraves; first-floor corbel brackets over central window 'support' continuous crowning entablature with lion masks to cornice. Flight of steps to central porch with fluted Corinthian columns in antis, the antae caps being foliate, dentil entablature; within are 4-panel double doors (the lower panels have surround with fleurons) with sidelights and overlight. Ground floor has 2/2 horizontal-pane between 2/2 sashes; first floor has 6/6 sashes. Basement has 3/6 sashes. Windows in plain reveals and with sills. Returns have outer Ionic pilasters with crowning entablature and pedimented gable ends. Rear has coped gable range with kneelers; 6/6 sashes. INTERIOR: retains original plasterwork and joinery including shutters to some windows, and open-well staircase with stick balusters. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: entrance to rear has tent hood on scrolled brackets. HISTORICAL NOTE: Built as part of the development of this area undertaken for Joseph Pitt in 1825-42, the general layout being designed by the architect John Forbes. Plot sold to Henry Haines, builder, for »250 on 18.11.1834 and house sold to Lt-Col William Elliot of Reading, for »1350 on 22.11.1839. Haines was a leading local builder who speculated in many
Pittville properties. A handsome Classical villa, skilfully articulated to give a more 3-dimensional effect than most. All the listed buildings along Pittville Lawn form a distinguished architectural group.
