GV II

Villa, now flats and attached area railings. 1840-1. Built by Solomom Sims, timber merchant, for Susan Dawson, widow, of Brislington in Somerset. Stucco over brick with concealed roof, brick and stucco side stacks; wrought-iron verandah to right return and area railings to rear. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys on basement, 4 first-floor windows. Stucco detailing includes Doric pilasters through ground and first floors to ends and between windows, crowning architrave, frieze and cornice; garden facade has similar pilasters, windows have tooled architraves, those to ground floor with cornices on console brackets. 6/6 sashes, all openings in plain reveals and with sills. Entrance to left return, flight of roll-edged steps to porch with Ionic columns in antis, architrave, frieze and cornice with blocking course, within a 4-panel, part-glazed door with sidelights and overlight with glazing bars. Basement has 6/6 sashes where original. Left return has 4 first-floor windows, the outer blind, otherwise 6/6 sashes. Right return has 4 first-floor windows. Central breakforward has end pilasters. 6/6 sashes and blind outer windows, all in tooled architraves. INTERIOR: not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: verandah to right return with anthemion motif to uprights and openwork scalloped frieze. Area railings to rear have X-motif. HISTORICAL NOTE: built as part of the development of this area undertaken for Joseph Pitt in 1825-42, the general layout being designed by the architect Joseph Forbes. All the villas along Pittville Lawn form a distinguished architectural group.
