4 terraced seaside houses, now flats, with railings. c1863 by John Ross of Darlington for the Saltburn Improvement Company. MATERIALS: Pease brick with sandstone dressings, both materials painted at Nos 11 & 17 and ground floor of No.13. Roofs mostly grey-green slate with brick chimneys. Cast-iron balconies and railings. EXTERIOR: 4 storeys, attics and basement; each house 2-window range except No.17, Edward House, 4-window range. 10 steps up to 6-panel 2-leaf door, now united, with circular middle panels and shaped overlights, at right of each house. No.17 has C20 6-panel door in narrowed opening. Surrounds of stone base to moulded chamfered jambs with raised keyed stone segmental head. Canted bay windows through basement and three storeys to left of each door; single lights over door and paired on top floor Some glazing renewed, especially at No.17; 2-light casements opening onto first-floor balcony except at No.17. 4-pane sashes to ground and second-floor bays of Nos 11-15 over canted bay. Impost bands to each floor, with cornices in first, plain heads on second; keyed segmental heads on top floor. Ground-floor balcony with simple arcaded balustrade rests on slender iron piers; first-floor balcony on scrolled iron brackets has elaborate cast-iron balustrade in foliage patterns. Floors above have sill bands. Bracketed and modillioned eaves cornice. Mansard roof has segment-headed dormers with sashes to Nos 11 & 13, pivoting light to No.15; No.17 has enlarged renewed dormers with flat heads. Large transverse ridge chimneys have panelled and corniced top sections. INTERIOR: not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: renewed area railings on dwarf stone wall in keeping with original iron work.
