GV II

Pair of semi-detached villas with attached walls, piers and railings. 1838-9. By Abraham Tyler, builder, who completed many houses in Pittville. Stucco over brick with hipped mock slate roof, brick and stucco party-wall stacks; iron verandah and area railings. PLAN: outer side hallways with service ranges to rear. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys on basement, 6 first-floor windows, and with single first-floor bay at left. Stucco detailing includes first-floor band surmounted by 3 Doric pilasters between centre windows. 6/6 sashes throughout in plain reveals and with sills. Venetian shutters and S-latches to No.50. End entrances: flight of roll-edged steps to 5-panel doors, the upper panels raised and fielded, the lower panels flush, with sidelights and divided overlights. INTERIOR: not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: verandah has x-and circle motif to uprights with continuous openwork frieze. Area railings have X-motif. Window boxes to ground floor at right have X-motif. Walls approx 2m high, ramped down to piers, shared with Nos 48 (qv) and 54 (qv). HISTORICAL NOTE: built as part of the development of this area undertaken for Joseph Pitt in 1835-42, the general layout being designed by the architect John Forbes. The villas are shown as laid out but not built on Merrett's 1834 Map. Nos 34-60 Prestbury Road (qqv) form a group of semi-detached villas. (Blake S: Pittville: 1824-1860: Cheltenham: 1988-: 23).
