Pair of semi-detached villas and attached railings and with adjoining walls and piers. 1838-9. By Abraham Tyler, builder who completed many houses in Pittville. Stucco over brick with hipped slate roof and brick and stucco party-wall stack; iron verandah. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys on basement, 6 first-floor windows. First floor retains shutter latches and has renewed Venetian shutters. Stucco detailing includes first-floor band surmounted by 3 Doric pilasters between central windows. 6/6 sashes throughout in plain reveals and with sills. End entrances: flights of steps to 5-panel doors, the upper panels raised and fielded, the lower panels flush, with side-lights and divided overlights. Wide eaves. To rear: No.56 has 3-storey, single-bay range. INTERIOR: not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: continuous verandah has x-and-circle motif to uprights and openwork frieze. Window boxes to ground floor have X-motif. Area railings at left have X-motif and arrowhead boundary railings with urn finials at left. Walls approx 2m high to end of each house with shared pier abut Nos 52 (qv) and 58 (qv). HISTORICAL NOTE: built as part of the development of this area undertaken for Joseph Pitt in 1835-42, the general layout being designed by the architect John Forbes. Shown as laid out on Merrett's 1834 Map. Nos 34-60 (even) Prestbury Road (qqv) form a group of semi-detached villas. (Blake S: Pittville: 1824-1860: Cheltenham: 1988-: 74-75).
