GV II

Terrace of 4 houses and attached railings. c1820-50. Stucco over brick with concealed roof and stucco party-wall stacks with iron railings. Double depth plan with side halls; No.10 has full-height service range at rear. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys on basement, 9 first-floor windows arranged 3:2:2:2. Stucco detailing includes pilasters through ground and first floors to ends and party-walls, 3 to left have fielded panel and ornate capitals with anthemion (missing to left end), otherwise Tuscan pilasters; crowning frieze with wreaths above capitals to left end and centre, cornice and blocking course with central scroll and panel cresting to each house; tooled first-floor sill band; tooled architraves and cornices on console brackets to ground-floor windows, 2 to left have frieze with fleurons, then frieze with wreaths and 2 with panelled friezes. First floor has blind opening, then four 6/6 and four 2/2 horizontal-pane sashes; ground floor has pair of 6/6 sashes (each in its own architrave), then a 6/6 sash with margin-lights in architrave with wreaths to frieze and scroll and panel cresting, sill on feet; two 2/2 horizontal-pane sashes with margin-lights and sills on feet. All windows in plain reveals and with sills. Entrances: one to left, otherwise to right, steps to 3- and 4-panel doors, some part-glazed (upper panels raised and fielded, lower panels flush) and with overlights with margin-lights, that to right end has sidelights, 2 to right in round-arched recesses. Basements: 3/3 sashes and some flush-panelled doors. INTERIOR: original features including plasterwork survives, cornices with fleurons, some original joinery including 4-panel doors, staircases with stick balusters and carved tread ends and handrail ending with lion's paw where original, otherwise not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: arrowhead forecourt railings and gates with anthemions to stanchions, except to left where area balustrade has stylized heart motif.
