Farmhouse and attached farm building, part of farm building
now garage. C17 with later alterations; house re-roofed in
C20.
MATERIALS: house of brown brick in English garden-wall bond on
high plinth of rubble stone; brick coped concrete tile roof
with brick end stacks and ogee-moulded kneelers. Farm building
of squared sandstone and mottled brick in English garden-wall
bond; slate roof with stone coped gables.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and attic; 2-bay gabled front. 4-panel
bolection moulded door and sashes with stone sills and wedge
lintels at attic level, C20 top hung replacements elsewhere.
Left return: single sash windows with glazing bars towards
front end of ground and first floors: towards rear, gauged
brick arches to blocked windows survive. Raised brick bands at
first floor and eaves levels. Rear of house: horizontal
sliding sashes at attic level.
Farm building of 2 storeys and has garage door adjacent to
house: further left is board stable door between small
windows, all with heavy stone lintels. Loft has two full
length doors, one approached by outside ladder stair.
INTERIOR: house has early doors of 4 raised and fielded panels
on strap hinges: C17 dogleg staircase with winders, square
newels and balusters, closed string and heavy moulded
handrail: roll edge beam over fitted fireplace opening flanked
by panelled cupboards: wide boarded doors: exposed beams and
ceiling joists on two floors. Farm building has roof of king
post trusses, one without purlin struts.
HISTORY: the house was formerly Ness Manor.
