GV II

House. Dated 1898. By Paul Ogden. For Henry Royce. Brick with stone dressings and some timberwork in later wing. Heavy stone-flagged roof. PLAN: irregular plan with central entrance flanked by asymmetrical gables. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys. Left-hand gabled wing contains full-height canted bay window, with 2-light mullioned and transomed windows in each face, and paired traceried windows to conservatory alongside, contained under continuous swept roof. Asymmetrical rear gable to this wing, with 6-light mullioned window projecting as squared bay beyond the gable. Central entrance in porch with round-arched doorway and flat roof with balustrading. 4-light mullioned and transomed full-height stair window in gable to right of doorway. Dated with initials HR in cartouche in apex of gable, which is coped with ball finials. Brick and mock-timbered service wing off-set to right, a somewhat later addition which originally formed a large wing, which was largely demolished c1917. Axial stacks. INTERIOR: large entrance hall with wall panelling and plaster-panelled ceiling in a C17 style. Similar plasterwork in other principal rooms, and 2 original fireplaces.
