GV II

Villa, now offices and attached railings. c1809-1820, shown on Post Office Map of 1820, with later alterations and restorations. Pinkish-brown brick in English garden wall bond with stucco to front and sides, hipped slate roof, rear brick stack and cast- and wrought-iron railings and porch. L-plan with service range to infill. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys on basement, 3 first-floor windows. First floor has 6/6 sashes; ground floor has 8/8 sashes, all in plain reveals and with sills. Basement has 3/3 sashes. Central entrance, flight of replacement roll-edged steps to double 6-panel doors with sidelights and fanlight with teardrop and circle glazing bars. To right return and rear are 6/6 and 3/3 ogee-headed sashes. To left return a canted bay window with 6/6 between 2/2 sashes. Decorative ogeed barge-boards to eaves. Rear: basket arch to basement (now infilled). INTERIOR: stairhall has elliptical arch, within an open-well staircase with stick balusters, wreathed handrail and carved tread ends. Room to right has built-in Regency mahogany cabinet. Panelled shutters to windows. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: stick balusters to sides of steps; porch has trellis-work panels, possibly the earliest cast panels in Cheltenham. Spearhead forecourt railings. Window box to canted bay has scroll motifs. HISTORICAL NOTE: this building may have originally been a mill. Occupies a good corner site at the junction of Rodney Road and Regent Street.
