Includes: The Swan Hotel BRADSHAWGATE.
Hotel. Built in 4 principal phases between c1800 and c1900,
and possibly incorporating an earlier building. What is
probably the earliest phase stands as an independent building
facing Churchgate, with the later phases forming distinct
buildings to either side of it. Painted brick with slate roof.
EXTERIOR AND PLAN: 3 storeys, 3-window range with central
entrance in Tuscan portico porch, flanked by full-height
shallow bow windows, with shafts dividing the tripartite sash
windows (all 2-pane). Renewed window over doorway (probably
enlarged to give access to balcony formed by roof of porch),
and 2-pane sash window above. Renewed cornice. Axial stack to
left of entrance.
A further early C19 building faces Bradshawgate; 3 storey,
6-window range with entrance to left, and segmental archway to
inner courtyard to right of centre. Doorway in moulded
architrave to left, and architraves to 15 and 12 pane sash
window above it. 2-window range to right, with 2-pane sashes
to ground and first floor, and 9-pane sashes in attic storey.
Palladian window over carriage entry to right, and tripartite
sash window in second storey. Inserted public house frontage
to ground floor beyond the archway, and 2 2-pane sash windows
on upper floors. Windows all have flat arched painted brick
heads and stone sills. End and front wall stacks; overhanging
eaves.
The Churchgate and Bradshawgate buildings are linked by a
corner block of c1850: also 3 storeys, 5-window range with
curved corner. Entrance in this corner, in architrave with
segmental canopy carried on brackets (probably c1900); 4-pane
sash windows above (the first-floor window obscured by inn
sign); continuous sill band to second floor. 2-pane sash
windows to Bradshawgate and Churchgate returns, with inserted
public house frontage to ground floor. Moulded overhanging
eaves cornice.
A further building was added to the complex c1900, and adjoins
the Churchgate building to the left: painted brick. 3 storeys,
2-window range with 2-storey canted bay windows divided by
pilasters and with elaborate pedimented over to first floor.
Paired 2-pane sashes in upper storey; pedimented gable with
scroll work etc. in low relief, incorporating swan at apex.
Various further late C19 and C20 extensions to rear.
