Bank. c1896-1900. Ashlar faced, rusticated to ground floor, brick to banking hall to rear. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys, palazzo style. Paired entrance doors (with original heavy panelled wood doors) to left of centre, flanked by 2 and 4 windows, all recessed between rusticated pilasters. Arcaded first storey, with Corinthian engaged pilasters carrying entablature with modillion cornice. Round arched windows with moulded keystones, and rosettes in frieze above. Shallow segmental stressed architraves to second-floor windows, which are divided by pilasters, alternately panelled and scrolled. Segmental pediment over central 2 bays with modillion cornice continuing across the whole facade. Coat of arms with flanking figures surmounts the pediment. Balustraded parapet to either side, divided by solid panelled pilasters, with urn finials at angles. Curved corner to right, and 4-window return. INTERIOR: the original interior survives remarkably complete, including vestibule and the main banking hall, with marble wall panelling, rich joinery and plasterwork, fireplaces and stained glass in domed lantern of top-lit banking hall. Built on the site of the Bank of Bolton, which had amalgamated with the County Bank in 1896. (Readiclough, Gordon: Bolton Town Centre: A Modern History: Manchester: 1984-).
