Includes: Former Public Baths GORTON STREET. Public baths and assembly rooms, now offices. 1845. James Greenhalgh, architect. Coursed and squared stone with slate roofs. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, 5-window range with advanced outer bays. Side entrances in centre of outer bays, the round arched doorways in Tuscan architraves. Stressed architraves to sash windows above. Recessed ground floor between the outer bays, with central entrance with overlight flanked by 12-pane sash windows. Tuscan colonnade of 6 bays carries the projecting upper storey, which has tripartite central window in stressed architrave with entablature hood, and outer sash windows. Plain cornice and blocking course. Angle quoins. 2 window return, the rear wing which formerly housed the baths themselves now demolished. INTERIOR: not inspected. HISTORY: the building, which also included provision for a public hall, was originally built by a private company, and later taken over by the borough.
