GV II

Villa, now offices. c1840-60 with later additions and alterations. Ashlar over brick with hipped slate roof, tall ashlar end stacks with triangular capping on brackets and iron balcony. Italianate style. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and basement, 2+2 first-floor windows, with entrance bay set back to left and single-storey extension to right. Breakforward to right of main range. Ashlar detailing includes tooled architraves to windows, those to ground floor at left with cornices; first-floor band; frieze and wide eaves on brackets. 1/1 sashes in plain reveals with sills and blind boxes. Porch in angle set back to left, arched doorway, pierced parapet; flight of steps roll-edged to recessed 4-fielded-panel door with fanlight. INTERIOR: 1983 list description notes original staircase with iron balustrade, and enriched cornices. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: ground-floor balcony has ornate scrolled panels. HISTORICAL NOTE: The design for the ironwork is similar to that produced by the Coalbrookdale Company, Ironbridge: Ornamental Panel No.36, found also on the Bandstand, Montpellier Gardens (qv) and on the balustrade of The Savoy Hotel, Bayshill Road (qv).
