Tower house, possibly not originally intended for domestic use. c1900. By Richard Harding Watt. Painted brick, with some projecting brick blocks. Flat roof. 5-storeyed, square in plan. Austere style, with small square windows set deep into the wall. Arched entrance in wall adjoining to the right with flamboyant wrought-iron hinges. Tower now terminates in plain parapet, but was formerly surmounted by a wooden gallery and pinnacle in the style of a minaret. INTERIOR: not inspected. HISTORY: the tower formed part of a complex including laundry and workers' cottages, established by Watt on the site of a tannery. Part of a remarkable development in Free Style built under the patronage of Richard Harding Watt.
