08/07/91 Former Headmaster's house and
dormitory block at St Joseph's
School II Former headmaster's house and dormitory block. Dated 1861. Red
brick, with yellow brick and stone dressings and hipped slate
roofs, some of them patterned. 3 side wall, single ridge and
single gable stacks. Gothic Revival style.
EXTERIOR: chamfered plinth, diaper work and bands, cogged
eaves. 2 and 3 storeys, 3 bays. L-plan.
South front has an off-centre projection with a canted bay
window with traceried lights and parapet. Above it, a 3-light
window with stone mullions. In the return angle, to right, a
square tower, 3 storeys, with an angle buttress and square
spire with finial. Segmental pointed doorcase with hoodmould
and shafts, and above it, a window. Above again, an inscribed
datestone, 1861, with hoodmould. Beyond, to right, a flat
headed 3-light window with pointed arched lights, and above
it, a 2-light mullioned window.
West front has a central wing with a canted bay window.
East side has buttresses and three 2-light pointed arched
windows, the central one altered to form a door. Above, 3
mullioned windows, and above again, a central 2-light pointed
arched window under a bargeboarded gable. On either side, a
single mullioned window. In the return angle to right, a
polygonal stair turret with a pointed arched doorway and slit
lights, topped with an octagonal spire.
Dormitory block, 3 bays, has buttresses. 2-light pointed
arched windows below, and mullioned windows on each floor
above.
INTERIOR has an open well stair with landings and foliage
wrought-iron balustrade. Dormitory block has an open well
cantilever spiral staircase with stick balusters and ramped
handrail.
