The Customs House
GV II
Custom house, now offices. 1725 altered early C19 and C20. Red
brick, stone bands, rusticated quoins, blue brick plinth with
chamfered stone top roof, stone coped gables and 2 gable
stacks. Plain tile.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys plus attics, 3 bay front with plinth, 1st
and 2nd floor bands, rebuilt parapet, moulded stone coping. To
left a panelled door with doorcase having fluted pilasters,
plain frieze and cornice. Above a painted timber Royal Arms.
To right 2 glazing bar sashes and 3 similar windows to 1st
floor, all with segmental brick heads with keystones. In the
roof 3 glazing bar sash dormers with segmental head roofs.
INTERIOR: some C18 joinery survives inside.
EXTRA INFORMATION: to the rear yard further remains of vaulted
undercroft to in No.10 South Street (qv), being part of the
former Dominican Friary which was founded in late C13.
